The beginning of our history
on 20 September 2024
The story of our business starts way back.
‘Dal Trifulè’ is a family story that starts in our lands, takes a trip to New York and returns to these woods.
A red thread that unites four generations!
This story starts with my great-grandfather Paolo Cerutti, a story that comes down to me Tiziana Cerutti, the fourth generation of trifulè in this family!
This story smells of truffles and has the colours of our hills and forests.
My great-grandfather immigrated to New York at the age of one in the early 1900s and grew up overseas until the age of 15, at which point part of his family, including him and his little sister Josephine (born in the city), had to return to Italy, to Piedmont, to the same hills they had left years earlier.
A return that forced them to start afresh, a restart above all economically, having left an established position in the then up-and-coming United States, finding here a country very different from the one they had just left, in which emerging was difficult. The young Paolo seemed to everyone to come from the future, from a land with customs and traditions too distant to understand, a country light years ahead of our own! Always ‘odd’, different, he thought too far ahead, which is why so many confused his brilliance with madness, now instead we know that he was simply very intelligent and capable.
To help the family with the household economy, he became a truffle hunter. With his experience and foresight, he slowly turned it into a job when nobody considered it as such yet.
He would look for truffles and sell them, search and sell in a loop of continuous hard work and fruitfulness, thus starting a tradition that has become centuries old.
I would have loved to have met him, the stories they tell me portray him as an odd but extremely witty and sarcastic character, a bit closed off but very likeable…. the more I hear stories the more I feel like him, maybe I didn’t quite get all his intelligence, but I’m sure he would have liked me and would have been proud to see the first ‘matota’ (girl) of the family continue his work.
The more I get into this business, the more I understand the richness and importance of the roots, the stories behind this world of legendary people and places.
Because truffles, before being food, are poetry and history that grow in the earth and are discovered to bring pleasure to the palate as much as to the eyes and mind.
Thank you grandpa bis for having given us this ‘magical’ world, a work, a tradition that has come down to me!
